Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua intervened in the tax payment dispute Tuesday, pushing those who owe significant amounts of unpaid taxes to enter into negotiations with the government to resolve the problems.
"Come and we may discuss how to pay little by little if you have a problem with what we are asking you to pay. You can pay $1 billion each month until it's finished. There is no issue; please stop making noise.
Give to God what is rightfully his, and give to Caesar what is rightfully his, even the Bible is clear on this, he remarked.
Yesterday, Mr. Gachagua spoke in Mombasa as he formally concluded the senator's retreat. The DP stated that paying taxes was a non-negotiable requirement and added that President William Ruto's administration was committed to using domestic resources rather than foreign ones to develop the nation.
"If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging. Stop digging first and determine how to escape the hole; one solution is to collect taxes from everyone, no matter how far back in time, and to halt exemptions, according to the DP.
